Our natural teeth have the potential to last for our whole lives, but preventative care is key.

The two principles of preventative dentistry are at-home care and routine check-ups with your dentist and hygienist. These two practices must co-exist for your teeth to remain free from the risk of decay, tooth erosion and gum disease.

The diet also plays a huge part in how our oral health evolves. When you come in to see us here in Reading, we can look at how you might wish to swap our certain food and drink for more tooth-friendly types that will not cause demineralisation, decay and other problems for your teeth.

FAQs

What role do routine examinations play?

Teeth can be frustrating, as they don’t always give you warning signs that a problem is present until a certain degree of damage has occurred. The purpose of routine check-ups is to identify even the smallest signs that there is something affecting your teeth, gums or jaw.

What’s the difference between the dentist and the hygienist?

This is a question we are often asked, and we always love to be asked this, as it allows us to illustrate the importance of seeing the hygienist (a third of people in the UK still don’t attend).

Choosing between going to the dentist or hygienist should never be an either/or scenario, as each professional has differing roles which complement one another.

A hygienist can:

  • Deep clean your teeth and gums to stop you from developing gum disease.
  • Perform teeth whitening.
  • Offer guidance on dental treatment/identify the need for a visit to the dentist.
  • Liaise with your dentist to discuss possible long-term treatment plans.

A dentist can:

  • Perform fillings.
  • Perform teeth whitening.
  • Create prostheses like crowns, dentures and bridges.
  • Carry out oral cancer screening.
