Tooth extraction is the surgical removal of a tooth.

Here at Loddon Vale, our dentists will make a full assessment of your mouth to identify if it is in the best interests of your oral health to remove a tooth.

Every avenue of treatment is explored before going ahead with the decision to extract a tooth. We can then look at the options you have for replacing these teeth, which we strongly recommend as your next steps should you wish to maintain good oral health and hygiene.

FAQs

When might my tooth need to be extracted?

There are a number of conditions that warrant a tooth to be extracted. These include:

  • Your wisdom teeth have become impacted.
  • You have severe gum disease that has caused loose teeth.
  • Severe infection.
  • You have crowded teeth (you might need certain crowded teeth to be extracted prior to orthodontic treatment).
  • Your tooth has become loose as a result of an injury.

Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?

We need every one of our teeth for a reason. When we lose just one, this disturbs how our teeth bite together, which can cause tooth grinding, which leads to tooth wear. The loss of teeth can also make eating a challenge and give way to speech impediments and difficulties.

What is the procedure like?

The entire procedure can be completed in just 20 – 40 minutes when a single tooth is extracted, and it’s a surprisingly straightforward and routine process. The extraction of additional teeth will take a little longer.

You may experience some pressure whilst the tooth is being extracted, but the area is anaesthetised, you should not feel any discomfort, and therefore you should be able to relax throughout. Your tooth is gently removed, and we may place stitches to help the area heal.

I’m a little nervous – can you help?

We completely understand that the thought of having a tooth extracted might feel slightly worrying. Many of our patients benefit from having some time before the procedures to ask questions – we will give you as much time as you need, and we will never go ahead with any treatment until you feel completely happy. Our dentists are kind people who consider not just your dental health but your well-being too.
