If a tooth needs a bit of extra strength to stay healthy, instead of a filling, we may place an inlay or onlay.

An inlay or onlay will restore chewing and biting forces, give you better oral health and pave the way for a more confident you.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are stronger than a normal filling but not quite as durable and restorative as a crown (they’re also less invasive than the latter). Whilst an inlay fills the inner cavity of a tooth, an onlay repairs a tooth’s cusp and overall structure.

Inlays and onlays can be created using a range of materials, including porcelain, gold, zirconium, amalgam and ceramics. The type of material used will depend on which tooth needs attention and the extent of the fracture or damage present.

Quick-fire benefits

  • Seamless results.
  • Cost-effective restoration that can prevent the need for more extensive treatment.

FAQs

What’s the most aesthetically pleasing material available?

Porcelain, resin and zirconium are the most tooth-like materials we can use to produce a natural-looking result. These are used when the affected tooth is particularly visible.

In the case of molars, we would generally choose a more robust material that can withstand all the chewing and biting you do on a daily basis. Gold is extremely strong, so we may suggest this for patients who have an uneven bite due to tooth grinding.

How many appointments do I need to attend?

2 appointments are generally needed to complete the process. the time between these appointments will be to allow our dental technician to create the permanent restoration. In the meantime, we will fit you with a temporary inlay or onlay so that you can bite and chew normally.

Will inlays and onlays protect my healthy tooth structure?

Yes. In fact, this is one of the reasons that make inlays and onlays such an effective means of repairing teeth. They protect the portion of your tooth that’s healthy, making them a more conservative alternative to crowns, which we would use if the damage was more extensive.

Our ethos is to explore all the ways in which we can protect as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.
